Mike F. and his wife, Sarah, needed an unusual roofing project completed at their Brighton, MI home. Although the existing roof was only installed in 2019, their replacement involved more than choosing new shingles. Four unusually sized curb-mounted skylights required additional planning to find a replacement solution, and Mike and Sarah wanted two of them to provide fresh-air ventilation by opening manually. RoofAdvisor worked through those details while planning a complete Owens Corning Duration® roofing system for the home.
A Complete Owens Corning Roofing System
For Mike and Sarah’s nearly 47-square roof, we installed Owens Corning® Duration™ Lifetime Architectural Shingles.
Duration shingles feature Owens Corning’s patented SureNail® Technology, Triple Layer Protection®, and a 130 MPH wind warranty.
The roofing system also included:
- Owens Corning ProArmor® Synthetic Roof Underlayment
- Owens Corning Starter Strip Plus® along the eaves and rakes
- Ice and water protection through the valleys
- Owens Corning WeatherLock® G leak barrier extending six feet at the eaves and protecting sidewalls and penetrations
- Owens Corning VentSure® Ridge Vent Pro
- Owens Corning ProEdge® shingles on the hips and ridges
- Advantage SafeLock galvanized ring-shank roofing fasteners
- New aluminum drip edge along the eaves and rakes
- Three new plumbing boots
- New wall and step flashing
- New chimney flashing
The project also included an AirVent Edge Vent on a designated roof slope as part of the ventilation work.
Finding a Solution for Four Unusual Skylights
The skylights were one of the more unique parts of Mike and Sarah’s project.
The existing skylights had unusual dimensions and curb construction that did not correspond neatly with standard replacement options. Rather than simply selecting a skylight that was close in size, we worked with our supplier to determine an appropriate replacement solution for the existing openings.
Ultimately, all four curb-mounted skylights were replaced with VELUX skylights featuring laminated LowE3 glass.
Two were VCM manual “Fresh Air” skylights, giving Mike and Sarah the ability to open them for ventilation. The other two were FCM fixed skylights.
The skylight installation included protection around the openings as part of the new roofing system and is backed by the specified 10-year manufacturer and 10-year workmanship warranties.
Protecting the Details Around the Roof
With 142 linear feet of wall flashing, 134 linear feet of step flashing, multiple skylights, plumbing penetrations, and a chimney, this roof had a significant number of transitions where careful water management matters.
The replacement included new flashing where specified, WeatherLock® protection at vulnerable areas, and new chimney flashing with fresh sealant.
RoofAdvisor also installed 37 linear feet of VentSure® Ridge Vent Pro and the designated edge vent as part of the roof’s ventilation system.
Long-Term Protection for Mike and Sarah’s Brighton Home
Mike and Sarah’s new Owens Corning roofing system is covered by the applicable Owens Corning Limited Lifetime Warranty with its specified TRU PROtection® period.
RoofAdvisor also backs the installation with our 25-year workmanship warranty.
While replacing a relatively young roof is uncommon, this project gave Mike and Sarah the opportunity to address the roof, ventilation, flashing, and four challenging skylights together rather than treating each component as a separate project.
