Leonard B. and his wife, Sharon, took their time choosing the right roofing system for their Commerce Township home. After comparing multiple contractors, reviewing material options, and carefully considering shingle colors, they selected RoofAdvisor for a complete roof replacement featuring CertainTeed Landmark PRO architectural shingles. Their project also included replacing an aging skylight, improving ventilation, and installing upgraded water protection across a large, steep roofing system.

Choosing the Right Roofing System and Shingle Color

Leonard and Sharon wanted to make an informed decision about their roof replacement, both in terms of the materials being installed and how the finished roof would look.

They considered several roofing estimates and explored different shingle options, including CertainTeed Landmark PRO. Because color was an important part of the decision, we provided physical shingle samples and addresses of completed roofing projects so they could see how different colors looked on actual homes.

Leonard also took the time to review the details of the roofing proposal, including the materials, installation methods, warranties, and contract terms.

That attention to detail helped ensure they understood exactly what was included in their replacement before moving forward.

A Complete CertainTeed Landmark PRO Roofing System

For Leonard and Sharon’s approximately 49-square roof, we installed CertainTeed Landmark® PRO™ Lifetime Architectural Shingles.

Landmark PRO shingles offer dimensional architectural styling and enhanced protection, including a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 15-year 130 MPH wind speed warranty, and 30-year StreakFighter® algae-resistance warranty.

The roofing system included:

  • CertainTeed Landmark® PRO™ architectural shingles
  • CertainTeed RoofRunner® synthetic roof underlayment
  • CertainTeed SwiftStart® starter shingles along the eaves and rakes
  • Ice and water protection through the valleys
  • CertainTeed filtered ridge ventilation
  • CertainTeed Shadow Ridge® hip and ridge cap shingles
  • Advantage SafeLock galvanized ring-shank roofing fasteners
  • New aluminum drip edge along the eaves and rakes
  • Two replacement plumbing boots
  • Two replacement roof ventilation components, connected to existing ductwork where available
  • CertainTeed WinterGuard® leak barrier extending six feet at the eaves and protecting sidewalls and penetrations
  • New aluminum wall and step flashing
  • Replacement chimney flashing

These components form a complete CertainTeed Integrity Roof System™, designed to provide coordinated protection across the entire roof.

Replacing an Aging Skylight

One of the decisions Leonard and Sharon considered was whether to replace their existing skylight.

Although the skylight was quite old, it had never leaked, so they initially explored the possibility of keeping it and simply replacing the surrounding flashing.

We explained that reflashing an existing skylight can be an option, but skylights have a service life just like other exterior components. Keeping an older unit during a roof replacement can mean needing to address the skylight separately later.

Ultimately, the project included removing the existing skylight and installing a new VELUX skylight with laminated LowE3 glass.

The replacement skylight is backed by the specified 10-year manufacturer and 10-year workmanship warranties.

Replacing it as part of the roofing project allowed the skylight and surrounding roof details to be addressed together.

Protecting a Large, Steep Roof

Leonard’s roof presented additional installation considerations because much of its surface has a steep 10/12 to 12/12 pitch.

Steep roofs require careful installation practices, particularly around valleys, hips, wall intersections, and other transitions.

The project included 187 linear feet of valley ice and water protection, 312 linear feet of premium WinterGuard protection at the eaves and vulnerable areas, and new flashing around wall intersections and the chimney.

We also installed 96 linear feet of CertainTeed filtered ridge vent to provide attic exhaust ventilation, along with new ridge and hip cap shingles throughout the roofing system.

These details help protect areas where water intrusion and premature deterioration can develop if roofing components are not installed correctly.

Long-Term Protection for Leonard and Sharon’s Commerce Township Home

Leonard and Sharon’s new roof is backed by CertainTeed’s Lifetime Limited Warranty, including SureStart™ PROtection and the Integrity Roof System™ warranty provisions.

RoofAdvisor also backs the installation with our 25-year workmanship warranty.

For Leonard and Sharon, this project was about making a confident, well-informed investment in their home. By taking the time to compare materials, review colors, understand the installation details, and consider the future of their aging skylight, they were able to move forward with a roofing system that addressed both appearance and long-term performance.
