Eli S. was ready to replace the 36-year-old roof on his Troy, MI home, but he wanted to make sure he was choosing the right roofing contractor and roofing system before moving forward. After reviewing multiple options, Eli chose RoofAdvisor and upgraded his home with Owens Corning Duration FLEX®, a premium SBS-modified architectural shingle designed to provide Class 4 impact resistance along with the protection of a complete Owens Corning roofing system.
A Premium Class 4 Roofing System
For Eli’s nearly 40-square roof, we installed Owens Corning Duration FLEX® Lifetime SBS Modified Shingles.
Duration FLEX combines the appearance of an architectural shingle with SBS-modified asphalt technology for greater flexibility and impact resistance. The shingles carry a Class 4 impact resistance rating and feature Owens Corning’s SureNail® Technology, a 130 MPH wind speed warranty, and 25-year StreakGuard® algae protection.
The roofing system also included:
- Owens Corning DeckDefense® Premium Roof Deck Underlayment
- Starter Strip Plus® along the eaves and rakes
- WeatherLock® leak barrier extending six feet at the eaves and protecting valleys, sidewalls, and penetrations
- ImpactRidge® SBS Modified IR Ridge Cap Shingles on the hips and ridges
- Advantage SafeLock galvanized ring-shank roofing fasteners
- New aluminum drip edge
- New plumbing boots
- New wall and step flashing
- Replacement flashing at two chimneys
Together, these components provide protection beyond the shingles themselves and create a complete roofing system designed to work together.
Improving Ventilation Along With the Roof
Ventilation was also addressed as part of the replacement.
We installed 52 linear feet of Owens Corning VentSure® Advanced Ridge Vent with an integrated Weather PROtector™ Filter, along with two solar-powered roof vents providing additional exhaust ventilation on the second story.
Addressing ventilation during replacement gives the roofing system an opportunity to perform as a complete system rather than simply installing new shingles over existing ventilation conditions.
Extra Protection for a Steep, Complex Roof
Much of Eli’s roof has a 7/12 to 9/12 pitch, with multiple valleys, hips, wall intersections, penetrations, and two chimneys. Those details make proper water protection and flashing especially important.
The project included 190 linear feet of ice and water barrier through the valleys, 250 linear feet of premium WeatherLock protection at the eaves and other vulnerable areas, 61 linear feet of step flashing, and replacement flashing at both chimneys.
We also installed Owens Corning ImpactRidge® on both the hips and ridges so the enhanced impact-resistant system extended beyond the primary roof slopes.
Long-Term Protection for Eli’s Troy Home
Eli’s new roofing system is backed by the Owens Corning System Protection Roofing Limited Warranty, including a 50-year TRU PROtection non-prorated material warranty, and 100% transferability as specified for the project.
RoofAdvisor also backs the installation with our 30-year workmanship warranty.
For a homeowner replacing a roof that had served the home for more than three decades, the project was an opportunity to do more than install another basic roofing system. Eli chose premium materials, Class 4 impact resistance, upgraded roofing components, and long-term warranty protection designed to help prepare his Troy home for the years ahead.
