What Work Was Done?
Bob H.’s roofing project in Livonia, MI, involved a full roof replacement designed to improve long-term durability, ventilation performance, and protection against Michigan’s changing weather conditions. The existing roofing system had two layers of shingles, requiring a complete tear-off before installing the new roof system.
Roofing System Installed
The new roof features CertainTeed Landmark 30-year architectural shingles in Burnt Sienna, paired with matching Shadow Ridge ridge cap shingles for a clean, cohesive appearance.
The roofing system also included:
- Starter shingles installed along all eaves and rakes
- Synthetic roofing underlayment
- Six feet of ice and water protection at eaves, valleys, and penetrations
- New 1.5-inch royal brown drip edge
- Two new royal brown pipe boots
- New chimney flashing
- Approximately 50 linear feet of new 1×6 wood replacement
- Additional Duraflo roof ventilation was added to the home
- Ridge vent installation replacing older box vents
Improving Ventilation and Roof Performance
One of the major upgrades included replacing outdated box vents with a continuous ridge ventilation system. Proper attic ventilation plays a critical role in helping reduce heat buildup, moisture accumulation, and premature roof aging.
Adding balanced ventilation can also help:
- Improve attic airflow
- Reduce the risk of condensation issues
- Extend the life of roofing materials
- Improve year-round roof system performance
Complete Tear-Off and Roof Preparation
Because the home had two existing roofing layers, the project required a full tear-off before the new system could be installed properly. Removing older roofing layers allows the roof deck to be fully inspected and helps ensure the new roofing materials are installed over a stable foundation.
The project also included:
- Full debris removal
- Dumpster service
- Thorough site cleanup after installation
Long-Term Protection for the Home
The completed roofing system provides the homeowner with improved weather protection, enhanced ventilation performance, and a refreshed appearance, backed by a 12-year workmanship warranty.
Projects like this are common throughout Livonia, where many older roofing systems begin reaching the end of their lifespan, and homeowners choose full replacement to improve reliability and reduce ongoing repair concerns.
